We Remember Mat the Cat

Mat is deeply loved and missed but will always be remembered as a feisty fighter who lived longer than anyone expected.  Of course, we hoped Mat would live longer, but Mat died unexpectedly just shy of his 19th birthday.  We were lucky to have had Mat for as long as we did.

We chose this photo because it captures Mat’s never-ending curiosity and (at least one of) those big yellow eyes which we still cannot believe we will never have the pleasure of having a staring contest with again.

Finally, we just want to thank Santa Monica Pet Medical Center, especially Annie Hernandez and Robin Olivieri, for being so helpful and patient with Mat during the last 8 years that we have lived in Santa Monica and they have taken care of him.  We know one of the reasons Mat lived as long as he did is because of your care.

Our thanks to Achee and Richard Stevenson for sharing this beautiful tribute.

In Memory of Kiwi

June, 1995 - July 9, 2011

We had such a bond from the moment I was given this beautiful blue Aby from a mutual friend's husband whose wife was a breeder and passed away suddenly.  Kiwi was the runt of the litter and so little, but had a huge personality that matched her ears (look at her pose in one of the pics).  She was a beauty and my little angel.  Kiwi would run to the window at the sound of my car and be at the door to greet me the minute it opened.  She loved asparagus over meat any day.  Kiwi was so funny and filled my days with smiles.  I'll miss my Kiwi kisses and her gnawing on my nose and toes.  I am truly blessed to have had her in my life.  The end was so sudden and quick, and she was put to sleep in my arms.  Thank you, Dr. Isaacs, for being so gracious, compassionate, sensitive and understanding.  Thank you for telling me my Kiwi was not suffering when I brought her to you.  Those words and your reassurance that I was doing the right thing has helped me tremendously these last few days.  Every day I remind myself of your words.  The card you sent brought me to tears, it was so touching.  Your office is filled with wonderful support staff and doctors.

Until we meet again Kiwi -- momma Ioves you and misses you so . . .

Our thanks to Denise Brown for this beautiful tribute.

We Remember Riptide

    Riptide grooming Beckham

Patty Gaskey - In Memory of "Riptide"

I adopted Riptide (previously known as "Lover Boy") in May of 2004.  He was my third cat, a rescue, approximately 2 years old at that time.  When I saw him at Centinela Feed near LAX, I put my hand in his cage to pet him and he was sleepy but purring like crazy.  How could I resist?  I took him home that day.  I basically wanted another cat to keep my other newly adopted cat, "Beckham", (tuxedo) company.   Beckham was almost one at the time and would wake me up every 2 hrs.  I thought, what better than to get him a friend!  So Riptide was wonderful and very loving and they became great friends.  So great, that about 3 weeks after Riptide passed, Beckham saw a picture of him on my laptop and turned his head sideways a few times, then put his paw towards the screen.

I think he was probably thinking, "hey Riptide, come play with me".  I was very amazed and will never forget that moment.  Riptide became the alpha and was pretty low maintenance, but so friendly to anyone that came in.  He would always greet you and do "drive-byes" or take in a few pets and would be at the door every time I came home.   He was also "Mr. Let Me Look in the Refrig" and jumped on the table to see what was in the packages I brought in.  He would "spoon" with me at night, too, and for the most part just liked to cuddle and to be close.
Sadly, he was put to sleep October 5, 2010 and afterwards found out he had cancer of the intestine and then some.  I miss him VERY much and appreciate all that Dr. Annie and the crew did at Santa Monica Pet Medical Center.  He brought me lots of joy and helped me with Beckham!  I am grateful for that and to have had him in my life!  He will forever remain in my my heart :)

Our thanks to Patty Gaskey for this beautiful tribute.

We Remember Beau

On Friday, December 10, 2010, I said good-bye to my handsome man, Mister Beau.  He was my world, he was my light, he was there when I got home everyday ready to cuddle.  He was one crazy cat - not like any other.   He was my boy.  He was the man!  I will forever remember him in my heart.  His ashes were spread throughout the Pacific Ocean off the Santa Monica Pier.  Today, two days later, I went for a swim in the ocean in Santa Monica.  He'll always be a part of me.  <3 Til we meet again...

We Remember Garbo

Garbo is in Heaven

On Wednesday, July 14th, Garbo came in from chasing a dragon fly around the pool, and was breathing heavily.  I rushed her to Dr. Annie who confirmed that she was in the final stages of cancer.  As I had promised her, she didn't suffer -- she went out on a sunny day, just after eating a treat and chasing a bug. . .  And with unconditional love.

Thank you for all her care.

We Remember Jade

This is an ode to my late cat, Jade.  Thanks to everyone that took care of him, Sandy, Robin, Eva, and so many more.  Thanks to all the times Dr. Hernandez, Dr. Yuan, and Dr. George operated on him for his fight injuries.  Thanks most recently to Dr. George for his beautiful origami note and a whole lot else.  You guys are really loving folks.  I am so happy that Jade was fortunate to have been in your care.

Day is Done

When the cat is gone
no lazy yawning flat on the lawn
no meowing at the break of dawn
no wild jade eyes far and withdrawn
when the cat is gone

When the fight is done
no lamp shade to sulk in the sun
no ears and eyes to sew back on
no gatekeeper or that big cat brawn
now the fight is done

When the purr fades out
no glass belly stretching shouts
no regal sphinx strutting about
no secret spots to find out
no voice to hear you call out
your purr has faded out

When there is no track
no footprints to retrace or retract
all the kitty things you can only reenact
he went out one night and never came back
Jade the cat

Former kool cat, Jade (also known as Jerry, Scraggle Tooth, Lamp Shade, Champ, Gatekeeper, Pisser, Little Prince, and Panther), 13, is believed to have died on Thursday, October 30, 2008 of renal failure.  He had a wild, independent, loving spirit and charmed pretty much everyone he encountered with his free and untamed ways.  A real fighter, tough cat, Jade fought many a time.  He fought through countless serious injuries -- a broken jaw, a brain injury, nearly lost a cheek, an ear, an eye, a limb but never quit on his resilience and managed to remain unusually handsome throughout.  He also had an amazing talent for assuming ingeniously artistic, sculpturesque poses.  The last 3 weeks were hard on Jade's body, but he weathered what he was given with bravery and nobility.  He really rose above it all.  The fella was the best cat ever.

We Remember Biff

May 14, 1988 - June 6th, 2007

Biff was “free to a good home” in The Recycler in 1988 and spent his first week at my house hiding behind the stove. At 8 weeks old he was a tiny loony thing and it took about three years before he would deign to be picked up and cuddled. He loved water and would wait outside the shower stall until I came out, then hurtle into the remaining water and paddle around. Other favorite tricks were throwing himself at great velocity into whatever newspaper you were reading and ripping it to pieces, and unrolling the entire toilet roll during the night. He grew up to be a wonderful, funny, sweet and loving companion despite a lifelong preference for hanging out in closets that caused most people to accuse me of having an imaginary cat.

At the age of 15 Biff had successful surgery for pancreatic cancer and suffered from diabetes, but with the tender loving care of Dr. Annie Hernandez and staff, he miraculously gave me four more years of precious companionship and passed away a month after his 19th birthday on June 6th, 2007. I miss him every day.

Bodhi
November 1, 1994 - June 19, 2007

Our precious Bodhi transcended into spirit Tuesday in Dawn's arms with David close by.  We are grateful that he had been very happy and healthy up until last week when on Thursday afternoon he became ill.  Many medical tests and several ultrasounds later it was determined that, along with other issues, his gallbladder was greatly enlarged and diseased.  It was surgically removed on Monday.   Unfortunately for us, he experienced lethal complications on Tuesday.  While we are feeling enormous loss at this time, we find solace in knowing in our hearts that his spirit is happy and free.

We will always hold Bodhi in our hearts as a highly treasured member of our little family.  He brought great love and joy to us constantly during our seven years and eight months together.  He added a beautifully innocent and consistently loving energy to our home. He loved all the wonderful people we encountered together on our daily walks, and everywhere we traveled together.  We so enjoyed the smiles and opening hearts of many who delighted in his gentle, friendly greetings and adorable presence.

We pray that all the love we all have for him lifts him on wings of divine joy ever higher

in realms of heaven.
